Charanams presented new compositions of Nivedita ShivRaj that highlighted the beauty of carnatic ragas and rhythms in traditional and contemporary compositions. The concert featured ragas and rhythm structures that are unique to carnatic music style.

Nivedita ShivRaj, composer of Charanams band, is the recipient of the Individual Artist Award for 2013 from Queens Council on the Arts. The concert was the public presentation of the QCA funded “Ragas and Rhythms” project of Nivedita ShivRaj.

The concert was partly funded by Queens Council on the Arts.

Flushing Town Hall presented Nivedita ShivRaj performing Indian music on the Veena with her World Music band – Charanams, in Cultural Crossroads, mixing two cultures.

Two cultures -Velly Bahia (Brazil) and Charanams (India), came together on one stage for a NEW series with an open dance floor and a musical jam.

Charanams performed at the presstigious, popular SummerStage Concert. Charanams played the opening act at the SummerStage main concert for the day featuring Wanda Jackson & Imelda May. Charanams will present the compositions from their winning performances at the Battle of the Boroughs.

SummerStage, a program of City Parks Foundation, presents performances of outstanding artistic quality, free of charge, to serve the diverse communities of New York City. The artists represent a breadth of genres and cultures and perform in an outdoor setting accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. SummerStage strives to develop audiences’ deepening appreciation for contemporary, traditional, and emerging artists as well as the communities in which these artists originate.

Charanams recently won The WNYC Ultimate Battle of the Boroughs – a city wide battle of the bands with over 500 entrants!

To celebrate their win, the Greene Space presented a featured concert of Charanams.
In this exclusive concert, Charanams performed the original compositions of Nivedita ShivRaj that were based on Indian ragams, blending Carnatic style with elements of Jazz.

Target First Saturday Concert

Vishnu Concert, July 02, 2011 at Brooklyn Museum of Arts, New York

RagaChitra’s talented vocalists teamed up with Charanams, the carnatic jazz band to present rare carnatic compositions on Vishnu, blending carnatic music with elements of Jazz. The concert was a part of the Target First Saturday Concert series, celebrating the exhibition ”Vishnu- the blue skinned savior” at the Brooklyn Museum.
